Given their constant exposure and frequent daily use, countertops must demonstrate reliable resistance to the conditions of use. A critical consideration in countertop applications is the susceptibility of calcitic stones to acidic substances—such as citrus juices or cleaning agents—which can cause surface etching, a chemical reaction that alters the finish of the stone rather than simply staining it.
For kitchens where direct exposure to such materials is expected, the use of calcitic stones is generally not recommended. Granites, and selected serpentinites, offer superior resistance to acidic environments, maintaining their surface integrity and long-term performance under demanding conditions.
